The Sanskrit Language Curriculum for grades 5 to 10 aims to enhance students' understanding of the classical language, with a focus on grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and cultural context. Grade 5 - 6: Foundation and Basic Grammar


1. Vocabulary:

  • Introduction to common words and phrases related to daily life, nature, animals, family, and the environment.
  • Learning numbers, directions, days of the week, and basic expressions.


2. Grammar:

  • Learning the basics of Sanskrit grammar, including nouns, pronouns, and adjectives.
  • Introduction to simple sentence structure (subject-object-verb order).
  • Singular and plural forms of nouns.
  • Basic verb conjugations in the present tense.


3. Speaking and Listening:

  • Simple dialogues on familiar topics such as greetings, introducing oneself, and asking for basic information.
  • Listening to simple Sanskrit stories and understanding their meaning.


4. Reading and Writing:

  • Reading simple Sanskrit texts, short stories, and verses from ancient texts.
  • Writing basic sentences and small paragraphs in Sanskrit.

Grade 7 - 8: Intermediate Language Skills


1. Vocabulary:

  • Expanding vocabulary to include words related to culture, festivals, family traditions, and the Indian heritage.
  • Learning words related to basic philosophical concepts, nature, and virtues.


2. Grammar:

  • Introduction to the concepts of tense (past, present, future) and verb conjugations in different tenses.
  • Study of sandhi (word joining) and simple compound words.
  • Understanding of masculine, feminine, and neuter genders.
  • Formation of simple and compound sentences.


3. Speaking and Listening:

  • Engaging in simple conversations using new vocabulary.
  • Listening to and comprehending short Sanskrit passages from classical literature or mythology.


4. Reading and Writing:

  • Reading short classical texts, fables, and stories from sources like the Panchatantra and Hitopadesha.
  • Writing short paragraphs and sentences on familiar topics.

Grade 9 - 10: Advanced Language Skills


1. Vocabulary:

  • Learning advanced vocabulary related to Indian culture, religion, philosophy, and classical literature.
  • Exposure to technical and literary terms used in Sanskrit literature, epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and texts from ancient scriptures.


2. Grammar:

  • Mastery of verb conjugations across all tenses (present, past, future) and moods.
  • Study of advanced concepts like voice (active, passive), sandhi (word formation), and avyaya (indeclinable words).
  • Deep focus on declensions of nouns and adjectives in all three genders.
  • Understanding complex sentence structures and the use of participles and conjunctions.


3. Speaking and Listening:

  • Participating in discussions on topics related to Indian heritage, philosophy, and ethics.
  • Listening to and analyzing excerpts from ancient texts like the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, and Vedas.


4. Reading and Writing:

  • Reading and interpreting classical Sanskrit literature, including excerpts from the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and other epics.
  • Writing detailed essays, translations, and creative pieces using Sanskrit grammar and vocabulary.
  • Translation of simple Sanskrit passages into English and vice versa.

Cultural Context:

Throughout grades 5 to 10, students are introduced to the cultural and historical significance of Sanskrit, including:

  • Study of ancient Sanskrit literature, including stories, fables, and philosophical texts.
